The project
Scratchboard Kitchen sits at 5 W Campbell Street in downtown Arlington Heights. Everything is made from scratch, and the menu changes through the year to follow what local farms are harvesting. It opened in April 2020 for breakfast and lunch, and now serves brunch, lunch, happy hour and dinner.
We designed and built a website as calm and considered as the food. Serif type, an oat and olive palette and plenty of white space let the photography lead, while every page keeps reservations, ordering and catering one click away.

The menus
All six menus live on one page with simple tabs: all-day, brunch, happy hour, something sweet, drinks and kids. Brunch is marked as available until 2:30 PM, and gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dishes are labeled, with nuts and seeds flagged.
The farms show up in the dish descriptions too, from Nichols Farm cherry tomatoes in the chopped salad to Slagel beef in the SBK Smash Burger. On the home page, the weekly specials get their own block: happy hour from 3 to 5 PM, half-price bottles of wine on Thursdays and a $15 fried chicken sandwich and beer on Sunday nights.
Mobile-first
On a phone the sidebar folds into a slim top bar with a menu button. Reserve a Table and Order Online sit right under the headline on the home and menus pages, the home page lays out reservations, ordering and catering as three numbered steps, and the phone number is tap-to-call.

Farms and people
Sourcing locally is the point of Scratchboard, so the farm partners get their own page. It lists the farms, ranches, creameries and mills behind the menu, from Frillman Farms and Slagel Farms to Kingston Creamery and Janie's Mill.
The about page tells the story behind the restaurant. Owner Danielle Kuhn spent nearly four years looking for the right space and opened the doors just as the pandemic hit. Founding chef Grace Goudie trained at the Culinary Institute of America and cooked at Ad Hoc and The French Laundry before coming home to the Chicago area.

Morning to night
Scratchboard started as a breakfast and lunch spot. The site shows the whole day now: house-made pastries and locally roasted coffee in the morning, local craft beer and cocktails later on, and a dining room that glows at night.
Private events get a clear invitation for birthdays, showers, rehearsal dinners and work gatherings, with a seasonal menu planned by the team. The news and press page collects the restaurant's recognition, including the Daily Herald's 2021 Readers' Choice Best New Restaurant and the Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce's 2022 Emerging Business of the Year.
The food
The site is built around Scratchboard's own photography, with natural light, patio tables and plates shot up close.
